The crop yield is sensitive to irrigation practices. In general, a severe and prolonged water deficit reduces yields which cannot be corrected by late, even heavy, watering. Water requirements are critical during flowering. However, holding back irrigation during this period is sometimes recommended to push the less mature plants towards flowering and to obtain even ripening. Care must be taken during the irrigation process to avoid damaging the mature plants.
